Frequently asked questions
What is Tarana's meaning?
"Tarana" comes from Tara na! - Filipino for "Let's go!" It's what your friend says when it's time to eat, explore, or have fun. That's exactly the energy we bring to learning.
Who created Tarana?
Tarana was created by a Filipino American with a background in tech and consulting who wanted to solve a very personal problem: staying connected to language and culture across generations. Built from lived experience, Tarana is made for heritage learners by someone who understands the journey.
What makes Tarana different from other language apps?
Other apps teach you words. We teach you how to actually survive a Filipino family gathering. Tarana blends language with culture, humor, and real-life moments.
How does Tarana use AI in lessons?
Tarana uses AI to adapt lessons to your pace, focus on your weak spots, and keep progress moving without you having to think about settings. Travel and family events can become practice themes too.
Can I use Tarana even if I'm not visiting the Philippines?
Many learners just want to connect with Filipino friends, chat with their lola, or finally understand what's happening in the group chat. Whether you're in New York, Dubai, or Sydney - we'll meet you where you are.
Is Tarana only for beginners?
Whether you're starting from zero or you grew up hearing Tagalog but can't quite speak it, Tarana adapts to your level. We grow with you.
Which Filipino languages does Tarana teach?
We teach Filipino/Tagalog as our main language, plus Cebuano, Ilocano, and Kapampangan as regional languages. Additional languages are planned.
How does the cultural learning work?
Every lesson comes with the good stuff - why we say "po" and "opo" to elders, how mano po works, the story behind adobo, and the unwritten rules of Filipino hospitality.
Is Tarana good for families and kids worldwide?
Tarana is for learners age 13 and older. Learners under 18 need consent from a parent or legal guardian.
What tools can I use to practice on Tarana?
You've got your Phrasebook to save and drill your favorite phrases, Cheat Sheets for real-life scenarios, and "Tara, Let's Go!" to find Filipino spots near you with ready phrases. Plus, track your progress with badges and Culture Gems on your Journey page.
Can I use Tarana on my phone and desktop?
Learn on your phone during your commute, switch to your laptop at home - your progress follows you everywhere.
Is there a Tarana app I can download?
Yes. The Tarana iOS app is available on the App Store. Android users can install directly from their browser using 'Add to Home Screen.' Native Android app coming soon.
How can I connect with other learners?
The Tarana Tambayan is your Filipino kapehan inside the app - a culture-first community where language, stories, and everyday moments come together.
Is there a free version or trial?
Yes. Tarana Membership includes a 7-day free trial, then costs $12.99 monthly or $99 yearly. Cancel anytime.
Who creates the lessons? Are they AI-generated or human-made?
Lessons are quality checked by native speakers and Philippine-based educators so the language sounds the way real Filipinos actually speak.
